CCNA Indigenous Shirt 2023

The History Behind The Establishment of CCNA
CCNA was established back in 1981 by a group of school teachers on the Capricorn Coast. Their collective aim was to provide females on the coast the opportunity to participate in a team sport. Teachers from Yeppoon State Primary School, Yeppoon State High School and St Ursula’s college formed a committee and created this wonderful association we all call CCNA. Over the years the association’s membership has exploded and now not only offers females on the coast the opportunity to participate in netball but also young boys and men the opportunity to play this great game.
To celebrate our origin, CCNA engaged the artistic talents of one of our very own. Kira-Lee Nicol a player, coach and mentor to our junior players who has been involved in CCNA for the past 18 years. Kira-Lee’s heritage comes from Ngaro Country in the Whitsundays along with her South Sea Islander - Ambrym Island connections on her mother’s side. Kira-Lee has intricately entwined our story into her beautiful artwork meshing our two stories into one by acknowledging the Darumbal and Woppaburra peoples. The green tree frog represents the Darumbal people the traditional owners of the lands waterways on which we stand and the Mugga Mugga the humpback whale represents the Woppaburra peoples from the Keppel Islands. The three circles on the back symbolises the three schools that started netball on the coast. These symbols are painted in their school colours. The U shape represents people/women at a meeting place – in this case the large U shape represents the teachers of the three schools. The fifth circle on the front is the foundation of CCNA using the colours of all three schools along with yellow which is one our our Association colours which relates to the coast. The background is Kira-Lee’s interpretation of Yeppoon (meaning the mouth of the river) where it meets the ocean.
